Nunchi(눈치) is a Korean concept of situational awareness. Euny Hong, author of The Power of Nunchi, calls it the "art of understanding what people are thinking and feeling", held by people who are sensitive to the dynamics of a group.
In practice, it means noticing who speaks, who listens, who interrupts, who apologizes and who rolls their eyes. From those cues you judge the relationships, the hierarchy and the mood, and you act on them. Hong argues its emphasis on unity, relationship building and collective harmony matters most in divided times.
AI systems are about to join groups. They will negotiate, allocate and trade alongside people and other AI systems. They need this skill. Our first results show models reading the clock: told a game ends in round 10, 16% cooperate in the last round. Not told, 95% do.
Reading the group is the next test.
